Dead Fuel Moisture Content (DFMC)

Dead Fuel Moisture Content (DFMC) is the amount of water in dead vegetation. This moisture is a critical factor in fire behavior, as drier fuels can lead to more intense and faster-spreading fires.

Technosylva fuel moisture calculations utilize the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model as an input to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG)’s Nelson Model, which is widely accepted across the fire behavior modeling community. The dead fuel moisture results have 2km spatial resolution and the resulting classifications represent the time lag it takes for a fuel’s moisture content to reach equilibrium with its environment.
