Fire encroachment into the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) is a critical component of Technosylva’s modeling, as it determines impacts to buildings, infrastructure, critical facilities, and exposed populations. To improve encroachment predictions, Technosylva developed custom WUI fuel models that extend beyond the standard Scott and Burgan (2005) wildland fuel classification system.
These enhanced fuel models incorporate building density parameters, characteristics of adjacent burnable vegetation, and WUI typology classification (isolated buildings, intermix, interface, urban core), along with roads and infrastructure elements. This comprehensive WUI characterization enables significantly more accurate calculation of potential fire impacts within developed areas.
