Canopy Fuels

Canopy fuels are combustible materials found in tree crowns. Canopy fuels data includes:

  • Canopy Height (CH): average height of the top of the vegetated canopy

  • Canopy Base Height (CBH): average height from the ground to a forest stand's canopy bottom

  • Canopy Cover (CC): percent cover or cover class of the tree canopy in a stand

  • Canopy Bulk Density (CBD): density of available canopy fuel in a stand

Canopy layers are produced using the available LiDAR information and optical imagery data and aggregated into polygons. A machine learning algorithm developed by Technosylva is used to predict the canopy layers in areas where there is no available LiDAR. The resulting complete canopy layers are seamless between those areas where canopy variables are derived from LiDAR compared to those areas where canopies were predicted using machine learning algorithms.
