Acres Burned in a simulation represents the projected burn area if a fire were to ignite at a specific location under the current or forecast weather and fuel conditions, and burn for a defined simulation period. It is not a prediction of a specific fire's final size; it is a modeled estimate of potential magnitude under those conditions.
Acres Burned alone does not indicate what was at risk within the burn area. It is used in conjunction with other impact metrics covered in the Fire Risk Glossary to translate fire extent into consequence estimates. A large Acres Burned value in a remote area carries very different risk implications than the same value at a wildland-urban interface.
